What can you do with Excel 2019?
Excel organises data in rows and columns and calculates with formulas, from simple sums to lookups and financial functions. PivotTables summarise thousands of rows in a few clicks, and charts turn the results into visuals for your reports.
Conditional formatting highlights what matters, Power Query imports and cleans data from other files, and data validation keeps entries consistent. It's the standard tool for budgets, invoices, stock lists and reporting.
New in Excel 2019: functions such as TEXTJOIN, CONCAT and IFS, PivotTable timeline filters, precision cell selection, and SVG and 3D graphics.
Should I buy Excel on its own or a full Office suite?
Buy Excel 2019 on its own if Excel is the only Office app you need. If you also need several other Office apps, an Office 2019 suite usually makes more sense than separate keys.
| Standalone Excel 2019 | Office 2019 Professional Plus | Microsoft 365 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apps included | Excel only | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access and Publisher | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and more |
| Payment | One time | One time | Monthly or yearly |
| Updates | None since 14 October 2025 | None since 14 October 2025 | New features added regularly |
| Devices | 1 PC at a time, via your Microsoft account | 1 Windows PC | Several devices, including Mac and mobile |
| Best for | You need only Excel | You use several Office apps | You want the latest features and cloud storage |
A standalone app is the full desktop version, not a cut-down one. Excel 2019 on its own has the same features as Excel inside an Office 2019 suite.
What are the system requirements for Excel 2019?
Excel 2019 needs a Windows 11 PC with a 1.1 GHz dual-core processor, 4 GB of RAM and 4 GB of free disk space. Microsoft lists the same minimums for the whole Office 2019 family, including standalone apps. If you need Excel on a Mac, contact our support team before ordering to check which platform the key is for.
| Component | Minimum requirement |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 11 |
| Processor | 1.1 GHz or faster, 2 cores |
| Memory (RAM) | 4 GB (64-bit); 2 GB (32-bit) |
| Storage | 4 GB of available disk space |
| Display | 1280 × 768 resolution |
| Graphics | DirectX 9 or later for hardware acceleration |
| Internet | Needed to redeem the key, sign in and install |
Microsoft's current requirements list Windows 11, as Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025. Full details are on Microsoft's Office system requirements page.
Is Excel 2019 still supported?
No. Microsoft ended support for Excel 2019 on 14 October 2025, together with the rest of Office 2019. The app still installs, activates and works, but it no longer receives security updates.
It can still make sense for offline PCs or to match an existing setup. For a supported version, we suggest Excel 2024, which Microsoft supports until 9 October 2029.
How do I install and activate Excel 2019?
Redeem the key to your Microsoft account first, then install Excel from that account. The instructions in your order email walk you through it; in most cases the steps are:
- Go to
microsoft365.com/setupand sign in with your personal Microsoft account (or create one). - Enter the 25-character key from your email to add Excel 2019 to that account.
- Open
account.microsoft.com/services(“Services & subscriptions”) and select Install. - Run the installer, open Excel and sign in with the same account if asked.
- Check File → Account: it should show “Product Activated”.
A common problem we see is a clash with Office that's already on the PC. Microsoft doesn't support two Click-to-Run installations that contain the same app, so Excel 2019 can't sit next to Microsoft 365 or another Office version that already includes Excel. An older MSI-based install such as Office 2016 can also block setup, so remove it first.
What does a Retail key linked to a Microsoft account mean?
It means the licence is stored in your Microsoft account, not just on one PC. Redeeming the key is a one-time step; after that you install by signing in, as Microsoft explains in its guide to redeeming a product key.
That makes reinstalling simple after a Windows reset or when you replace your computer: sign in to Services & subscriptions and select Install again. The licence covers one PC at a time, so uninstall Excel from the old computer first.
Use one personal Microsoft account and keep its sign-in details safe. If you redeem the key with a throwaway address or a work account, the licence can be hard to find later.
Frequently asked questions
Does Excel 2019 include XLOOKUP?
No. XLOOKUP and dynamic arrays arrived with Excel 2021. Excel 2019 uses VLOOKUP and INDEX/MATCH for lookups and adds functions such as TEXTJOIN, CONCAT and IFS. If you rely on XLOOKUP in shared workbooks, choose Excel 2024 instead.
Can I still use Excel 2019 now that support has ended?
Yes. The app installs, activates and works as before. Since 14 October 2025, though, Microsoft no longer releases security updates for it, so it's best for offline or low-risk use. For a supported version, choose Excel 2024, which gets updates until 9 October 2029.
Can I reinstall Excel 2019 or move it to a new PC?
Yes. Because the Retail licence sits in your Microsoft account, you can sign in at account.microsoft.com/services and install it again after a reset or on a new PC. Uninstall it from the old computer first, because the licence covers one PC at a time.
Do I need Office installed to use Excel 2019?
No. Excel 2019 is a complete standalone app and installs on its own, without any other Office app. If the PC already has a different Office version that includes Excel, remove it first, as explained in the installation section above.
