How is Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019 different from Enterprise LTSC 2019?
Technically, IoT Enterprise is the same Windows as Enterprise: Microsoft describes it as binary equivalent. The difference is the licence. IoT Enterprise is licensed for fixed-purpose devices, such as ATMs, kiosks, point-of-sale terminals, thin clients, medical devices and digital signage, with its own allowances and restrictions.
| IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019 | Enterprise LTSC 2019 | |
|---|---|---|
| Intended use | Dedicated, fixed-purpose devices | Special-purpose PCs in an organisation |
| Security updates until | 9 January 2029 | 9 January 2029 |
| Feature updates | None (static feature set) | None (static feature set) |
| Same Windows code as Enterprise | Yes (binary equivalent) | Yes |
| Hardware minimums | Lower options for specialised devices (32-bit, 1 GB RAM, TPM optional) | Standard Windows 10 requirements |
For the 2019 release, both editions are supported until 9 January 2029, so the difference is in the licence terms and hardware options rather than support length.
How long is Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019 supported?
Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019 gets security updates until 9 January 2029. Microsoft doesn't publish feature updates for IoT Enterprise LTSC through Windows Update, and moving to a later IoT Enterprise LTSC version requires a new licence.
Its mainstream support ended on 9 January 2024. Security updates continue in extended support until the date above.
You can check the dates on Microsoft's lifecycle page for Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019.
What hardware does Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019 need?
Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC runs on modest hardware, including 32-bit devices. Microsoft's preferred minimum is a 64-bit system with 2 GB of RAM and 20 GB of storage, and specialised devices can go lower. TPM, a display and graphics are optional for appliance-like devices.
| Component | 64-bit | 32-bit |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 1 GHz or faster | 1 GHz or faster |
| Memory (RAM) | 2 GB | 1 GB |
| Storage | 20 GB | 16 GB |
| TPM | TPM 2.0 preferred; optional on specialised devices | Optional |
| Display and graphics | 800 × 600, DirectX 9 or later (optional on specialised devices) | Optional |

How do I activate Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019?
LTSC is installed from its own installation media with a clean install. You can't turn an existing Home or Pro installation into LTSC by entering a key, so back up your files before you start.
- Download the installation media from the link in your order email and create a bootable USB drive.
- Start the PC from the USB drive and choose a custom (clean) installation.
- Enter the 25-character key when setup asks for it, or skip that step and add it afterwards.
- After setup, open Settings → Update & Security → Activation and select Change product key if the key isn't applied yet.
- Check that Activation says Windows is activated.
A common issue we see is an IoT Enterprise LTSC key entered on a normal Home or Pro installation. It won't activate there: install from the media in your download link first, then activate.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use IoT Enterprise LTSC on a normal desktop PC?
It will install and run, but the licence is meant for fixed-purpose devices such as kiosks, point-of-sale terminals or machine controllers. For an everyday office or home PC, Windows 11 Pro is the licence designed for that use.
How long does Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019 get security updates?
Until 9 January 2029. Mainstream support ended in January 2024; security updates continue until that date. During that time it receives security fixes but no new features, which is what most device makers want for equipment that stays in the field for years.
Is IoT Enterprise a different Windows from Enterprise?
No. Microsoft describes Windows IoT Enterprise as binary equivalent to Windows Enterprise, so it runs the same apps and uses the same management tools. The differences are in the licence terms, the support length and the hardware options.
Does Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC support 32-bit devices?
Yes. Microsoft lists a 32-bit option with lower minimums of 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. The preferred minimum is a 64-bit system with 2 GB of RAM and 20 GB of storage, so 64-bit is the safer choice if the hardware allows it.
