What can you do with Word 2019?

Word handles everything from a one-page letter to a 200-page report. Styles and templates keep formatting consistent, and you get automatic tables of contents, footnotes, mail merge for personalised letters and labels, and Track Changes for reviewing edits.

Files save in the standard .docx format and export to PDF in one click, so anyone can read them. Spelling and grammar are checked as you type.

New in Word 2019: built-in Microsoft Translator, Learning Tools for easier reading, SVG icons and 3D models, and improved pen and ink tools.

Should I buy Word on its own or a full Office suite?

Buy Word 2019 on its own if Word is the only Office app you need. If you also need several other Office apps, an Office 2019 suite usually makes more sense than separate keys.

A standalone app is the full desktop version, not a cut-down one. Word 2019 on its own has the same features as Word inside an Office 2019 suite.

What are the system requirements for Word 2019?

Word 2019 needs a Windows 11 PC with a 1.1 GHz dual-core processor, 4 GB of RAM and 4 GB of free disk space. Microsoft lists the same minimums for the whole Office 2019 family, including standalone apps. If you need Word on a Mac, contact our support team before ordering to check which platform the key is for.

Microsoft's current requirements list Windows 11, as Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025. Full details are on Microsoft's Office system requirements page.

Is Word 2019 still supported?

No. Microsoft ended support for Word 2019 on 14 October 2025, together with the rest of Office 2019. The app still installs, activates and works, but it no longer receives security updates.

It can still make sense for offline PCs or to match an existing setup. For a supported version, we suggest Word 2024, which Microsoft supports until 9 October 2029.

How do I install and activate Word 2019?

Redeem the key to your Microsoft account first, then install Word from that account. The instructions in your order email walk you through it; in most cases the steps are:

  1. Go to microsoft365.com/setup and sign in with your personal Microsoft account (or create one).
  2. Enter the 25-character key from your email to add Word 2019 to that account.
  3. Open account.microsoft.com/services (“Services & subscriptions”) and select Install.
  4. Run the installer, open Word and sign in with the same account if asked.
  5. Check File → Account: it should show “Product Activated”.

A common problem we see is a clash with Office that's already on the PC. Microsoft doesn't support two Click-to-Run installations that contain the same app, so Word 2019 can't sit next to Microsoft 365 or another Office version that already includes Word. An older MSI-based install such as Office 2016 can also block setup, so remove it first.

What does a Retail key linked to a Microsoft account mean?

It means the licence is stored in your Microsoft account, not just on one PC. Redeeming the key is a one-time step; after that you install by signing in, as Microsoft explains in its guide to redeeming a product key.

That makes reinstalling simple after a Windows reset or when you replace your computer: sign in to Services & subscriptions and select Install again. The licence covers one PC at a time, so uninstall Word from the old computer first.

Use one personal Microsoft account and keep its sign-in details safe. If you redeem the key with a throwaway address or a work account, the licence can be hard to find later.

Frequently asked questions

Can Word 2019 open files from other Word versions?

Yes. Word 2019 uses the standard .docx format, so it opens files from Microsoft 365 and other recent Word versions, as well as older .doc files. You can also save any document as a PDF. Very new features from Microsoft 365 may display slightly differently.

Can I still use Word 2019 now that support has ended?

Yes. The app installs, activates and works as before. Since 14 October 2025, though, Microsoft no longer releases security updates for it, so it's best for offline or low-risk use. For a supported version, choose Word 2024, which gets updates until 9 October 2029.

Can I reinstall Word 2019 or move it to a new PC?

Yes. Because the Retail licence sits in your Microsoft account, you can sign in at account.microsoft.com/services and install it again after a reset or on a new PC. Uninstall it from the old computer first, because the licence covers one PC at a time.

Do I need Office installed to use Word 2019?

No. Word 2019 is a complete standalone app and installs on its own, without any other Office app. If the PC already has a different Office version that includes Word, remove it first, as explained in the installation section above.
