Should I license SQL Server per core or with Server + CAL?
Choose Server + CAL when you can count a small, fixed group of users or devices; choose Per Core when users are many or unknown. Standard is the only SQL Server edition sold under both models.
| Server + CAL | Per Core | |
|---|---|---|
| What you license | Each server or VM running SQL Server, plus every user or device | Every core of the server or VM |
| CALs needed | Yes, one per user or device | No |
| Minimum | One server licence | 4 core licences per processor or VM |
| Best for | Internal apps with a known number of users | Websites, customer portals, large teams |
| Editions | Standard only | Standard and Enterprise |
A common issue we see is a server licence bought for a public website or app. Internal staff are easy to count, but external users are not, and Microsoft's terms say that connection pooling or a web server in between doesn't reduce the CALs required. In that case, per-core licensing is usually the right model.
Should I choose SQL Server 2022 Standard or Enterprise?
Choose Standard for most business applications, and Enterprise only for very large or mission-critical databases. SQL Server 2022 Standard supports up to 24 cores and 128 GB of buffer pool memory per instance, which covers most small and mid-size workloads. Enterprise adds unlimited scale, full availability groups and online index maintenance.
| Standard | Enterprise | |
|---|---|---|
| Licensing models | Per Core, or Server + CAL | Per Core (new purchases) |
| Max compute per instance | Lesser of 4 sockets or 24 cores | Operating system maximum |
| Max buffer pool memory per instance | 128 GB | Operating system maximum |
| Always On availability groups | Basic only (2 replicas, 1 database) | Full, up to 8 secondary replicas |
| Failover cluster instance nodes | 2 | Up to 16 |
| Online index create and rebuild | No | Yes |
| Transparent data encryption (TDE) | Yes | Yes |
| Resource Governor | No | Yes |
A common mistake we see is paying for Enterprise "just in case". If you later need it, SQL Server Setup can upgrade a Standard instance to Enterprise in place. See Microsoft's SQL Server 2022 editions and features for the full list.
What's new in SQL Server 2022?
SQL Server 2022 added ledger tables for tamper-evident data, the link to Azure SQL Managed Instance for disaster recovery and migration, and contained availability groups. Query Store is switched on by default for new databases.
Parameter Sensitive Plan optimization helps queries whose best plan depends on the values passed in. SQL Server 2022 can also back up to S3-compatible object storage, and it supports TDS 8.0 with mandatory encryption and TLS 1.3.
What are the system requirements for SQL Server 2022?
SQL Server 2022 needs a 64-bit (x64) processor of at least 1.4 GHz, 1 GB of RAM and 6 GB of free disk space. These are bare minimums: Microsoft recommends at least 4 GB of RAM, and production databases usually need far more. Standard also installs on Windows 10 and 11, which is handy for small offices and test machines.
| Component | Minimum requirement |
|---|---|
| Processor | x64, 1.4 GHz minimum; 2.0 GHz or faster recommended |
| Memory (RAM) | 1 GB minimum; 4 GB or more recommended |
| Disk space | 6 GB of free space minimum |
| Operating system | Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022 or 2025; Windows 10 (version 1607 or later) or Windows 11 for Standard |
| .NET Framework | 4.7.2 |

How do I install and activate SQL Server 2022 Standard?
Download SQL Server 2022 from the link in your order email and enter the product key during Setup. The key decides which edition is installed. SQL Server has no separate online activation like Windows, so once Setup finishes with your key, the Standard edition is ready to use.
- Run
setup.exeas an administrator and open Installation → New SQL Server stand-alone installation. - On the Product Key page, choose to enter a product key and type the key from your order email.
- Accept the licence terms and select the features you need. Most servers only need Database Engine Services.
- Choose a default or named instance, set the service accounts and authentication mode, and finish the wizard.
- Already running Evaluation or Express? Open Maintenance → Edition Upgrade in the Installation Center and enter your key instead of reinstalling.
A common mistake we see is clicking through the Product Key page with the free Evaluation edition selected. Evaluation stops working after 180 days. If that has happened, run Edition Upgrade with your key; your databases stay where they are.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need CALs with SQL Server 2022 Standard?
It depends on the licence model. With a server licence (Server + CAL), every user or device that accesses SQL Server needs a SQL Server CAL. With core-based licensing, no CALs are needed, however many people connect.
Can I install SQL Server 2022 Standard on Windows 10 or 11?
Yes. Microsoft supports Standard on Windows 10 and Windows 11 as well as on Windows Server, which suits small offices, developers and test machines. Enterprise, by contrast, only runs on Windows Server.
Is SQL Server 2022 still supported?
Yes. SQL Server 2022 is in mainstream support until January 2028, so it still gets fixes and improvements. Extended support with security updates then continues until January 2033, under Microsoft's Fixed Lifecycle Policy.
Can I upgrade from Express or Evaluation without reinstalling?
Yes. In the SQL Server Installation Center, choose Maintenance → Edition Upgrade and enter your Standard key. Setup changes the edition in place and keeps your databases, though the SQL Server services restart during the upgrade.
