What can you do with Publisher 2019?
Publisher is built for layout-focused print pieces: flyers, newsletters, brochures, menus, business cards and certificates. You place text boxes and images freely on the page, which is harder to do in Word.
Ready-made templates and building blocks speed things up, and mail merge personalises cards or labels. Finished designs can be printed, saved as PDF or packed for a commercial printer.
Publisher 2019 kept the established layout tools rather than adding major new features, so files and workflows from earlier versions carry over easily.
Should I buy Publisher on its own or a full Office suite?
Buy Publisher 2019 on its own if Publisher is the only Office app you need. If you also need several other Office apps, an Office 2019 suite usually makes more sense than separate keys.
| Standalone Publisher 2019 | Office 2019 Professional Plus | Microsoft 365 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apps included | Publisher only | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access and Publisher | Current Office apps; Publisher is being removed from October 2026 |
| Payment | One time | One time | Monthly or yearly |
| Updates | None since 14 October 2025 | None since 14 October 2025 | New features added regularly |
| Devices | 1 PC at a time, via your Microsoft account | 1 Windows PC | Several devices, including Mac and mobile |
| Best for | You need only Publisher | You use several Office apps | You want the latest features and cloud storage |
A standalone app is the full desktop version, not a cut-down one. Publisher 2019 on its own has the same features as Publisher inside an Office 2019 suite.
What are the system requirements for Publisher 2019?
Publisher 2019 needs a Windows 11 PC with a 1.1 GHz dual-core processor, 4 GB of RAM and 4 GB of free disk space. Microsoft lists the same minimums for the whole Office 2019 family, including standalone apps. There's no Mac version of Publisher.
| Component | Minimum requirement |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 11 |
| Processor | 1.1 GHz or faster, 2 cores |
| Memory (RAM) | 4 GB (64-bit); 2 GB (32-bit) |
| Storage | 4 GB of available disk space |
| Display | 1280 × 768 resolution |
| Graphics | DirectX 9 or later for hardware acceleration |
| Internet | Needed to redeem the key, sign in and install |
Microsoft's current requirements list Windows 11, as Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025.
Is Publisher 2019 still supported?
No. Microsoft ended support for Publisher 2019 on 14 October 2025, together with the rest of Office 2019. The app still installs, activates and works, but it no longer receives security updates.
Microsoft is also retiring Publisher itself: it isn't part of Office 2024, and Microsoft is removing it from Microsoft 365 from October 2026. Installed copies keep working, and Microsoft suggests saving files as PDF or moving projects to Word or PowerPoint, as explained in its Publisher retirement notice. Both apps are part of Office 2024, which Microsoft supports until 9 October 2029.
How do I install and activate Publisher 2019?
Redeem the key to your Microsoft account first, then install Publisher from that account. The instructions in your order email walk you through it; in most cases the steps are:
- Go to
microsoft365.com/setupand sign in with your personal Microsoft account (or create one). - Enter the 25-character key from your email to add Publisher 2019 to that account.
- Open
account.microsoft.com/services(“Services & subscriptions”) and select Install. - Run the installer, open Publisher and sign in with the same account if asked.
- Check File → Account: it should show “Product Activated”.
A common problem we see is a clash with Office that's already on the PC. Microsoft doesn't support two Click-to-Run installations that contain the same app, so Publisher 2019 can't sit next to Microsoft 365 or another Office version that already includes Publisher. An older MSI-based install such as Office 2016 can also block setup, so remove it first.
What does a Retail key linked to a Microsoft account mean?
It means the licence is stored in your Microsoft account, not just on one PC. Redeeming the key is a one-time step; after that you install by signing in, as Microsoft explains in its guide to redeeming a product key.
That makes reinstalling simple after a Windows reset or when you replace your computer: sign in to Services & subscriptions and select Install again. The licence covers one PC at a time, so uninstall Publisher from the old computer first.
Use one personal Microsoft account and keep its sign-in details safe. If you redeem the key with a throwaway address or a work account, the licence can be hard to find later.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to my Publisher files when support ends?
Your .pub files keep opening in Publisher 2019 on your PC. Because Microsoft is retiring Publisher, it recommends saving important files as PDF through File → Save As. A PDF can then be opened in Word if you want to keep editing there, though the layout may shift.
Can I still use Publisher 2019 now that support has ended?
Yes. The app installs, activates and works as before. Since 14 October 2025, though, Microsoft no longer releases security updates for it, so it's best for offline or low-risk use. For a supported version, choose Word or PowerPoint 2024, which gets updates until 9 October 2029.
Can I reinstall Publisher 2019 or move it to a new PC?
Yes. Because the Retail licence sits in your Microsoft account, you can sign in at account.microsoft.com/services and install it again after a reset or on a new PC. Uninstall it from the old computer first, because the licence covers one PC at a time.
Do I need Office installed to use Publisher 2019?
No. Publisher 2019 is a complete standalone app and installs on its own, without any other Office app. If the PC already has a different Office version that includes Publisher, remove it first, as explained in the installation section above.
Browse all standalone Office apps, or get Publisher together with Word, Excel and more in Office 2019 Professional Plus.
