Is Visual Studio Community enough, or do I need Professional?
Community is enough if you're an individual developer, a student, an open-source contributor or a non-enterprise team of up to 5 users. It's free and has the same core IDE. Microsoft defines an enterprise as an organisation with more than 250 PCs or more than USD 1 million in annual revenue.
Professional is the licence for commercial development in organisations that don't qualify for Community. A common question we get is from freelancers whose business has grown: once you pass Microsoft's thresholds, Community is no longer licensed for your team.
What's new in Visual Studio 2026?
Visual Studio 2026 (version 18) was released in November 2025. It supports .NET 10 and C# 14, builds GitHub Copilot more deeply into the IDE (Copilot itself is a separate GitHub service), and Microsoft says it is faster and more responsive than Visual Studio 2022 on the same hardware.
It also has a new support model. Visual Studio 2026 follows Microsoft's Modern Lifecycle Policy with monthly updates, and each annual release is supported for two years: the first with new features and fixes, the second with security updates only through a Long-Term Servicing Channel, available for Professional and Enterprise.
What are the system requirements for Visual Studio 2026?
Visual Studio 2026 runs on Windows 11 and on Windows Server 2019, 2022 or 2025. Microsoft's minimum is 4 GB of RAM, but 16 GB is recommended for typical professional work, and most installs need 20–50 GB of disk space. Windows 10 is no longer on Microsoft's supported list, because Windows 10 itself reached end of support in October 2025.
| Component | Minimum requirement |
|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 11 (including ARM64) or Windows Server 2019, 2022 or 2025 |
| Processor | x64 or ARM64; quad-core or better recommended |
| Memory (RAM) | 4 GB minimum; 16 GB recommended |
| Disk space | 2.5 GB to 210 GB depending on features; typical installs need 20–50 GB; SSD recommended |
| Display | WXGA (1366 × 768) minimum; 1920 × 1080 or higher works best |
| Permissions | Administrator rights to install and update |

How do I install and activate Visual Studio 2026 Professional?
Download the Visual Studio 2026 installer, install the Professional edition, and then unlock it as described in your order email. For Visual Studio 2026, Microsoft unlocks subscription licences by signing in with the assigned account, and product keys are mainly used for volume-licensed installs.
- Run the Visual Studio Installer and choose Visual Studio Professional 2026.
- Select the workloads you need, such as .NET desktop development, ASP.NET and web development or Desktop development with C++.
- Open Visual Studio and sign in with your Microsoft account.
- Go to Help → Register Product to see the licence status.
- Unlock it with the method in your order email: the account the licence is assigned to, or Unlock with a Product Key if your licence comes with a key.
A common issue we see is a trial message that won't go away. That means the licence hasn't been applied to this installation yet, or the wrong edition is installed. Check that you installed Professional, and contact our support team with your order number if it still shows as a trial.
Frequently asked questions
Is Visual Studio Community free for commercial use?
Yes, within Microsoft's limits. Individual developers can use it for their own free or paid apps, and non-enterprise organisations can use it with up to 5 users. Larger organisations may use it only for classroom learning, academic research or open-source projects.
Can I install Visual Studio 2026 on more than one computer?
Yes. Microsoft licenses Visual Studio per user, not per installation, so the licensed developer may install and use it on any number of devices. Every other developer who uses it needs a licence of their own.
Can I install Visual Studio 2026 next to another version?
Yes. Different major versions of Visual Studio, such as 2019 and 2022, can be installed side by side on the same PC. That helps when you maintain older projects while starting new ones in a newer version.
Can I sell apps I build with Visual Studio Professional?
Yes. Visual Studio Professional is meant for commercial development, and the apps you build are yours to distribute or sell. Third-party components and libraries you include may come with licence terms of their own.
