What's the difference between Visual Studio 2017 Professional and Enterprise?
Enterprise includes everything in Professional and adds advanced debugging, testing and architecture tools for larger teams. Professional has the full IDE that most developers use day to day.
| Community | Professional | Enterprise | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Paid licence | Paid licence |
| Who may use it | Individuals, open source, classroom, academic research; non-enterprise organisations up to 5 users | Any organisation | Any organisation |

| Code Clone detection | No | No | Yes |
This summary follows Microsoft's Visual Studio edition comparison; individual features can differ slightly between Visual Studio versions.
When is Visual Studio 2017 Enterprise worth it?
Enterprise is worth it when your team relies on advanced diagnostics and testing. IntelliTrace records execution so you can step back through it, Live Unit Testing shows test results as you type, and IntelliTest and Microsoft Fakes help generate and isolate unit tests.
It also adds architecture tools, such as layer diagrams with dependency validation, which help large codebases keep their structure. If you mainly write, debug and ship code, Professional usually covers it.
Is Visual Studio 2017 still supported?
Only until April 2027. Mainstream support for Visual Studio 2017 ended in April 2022, and extended support with security fixes ends in April 2027. After that, Microsoft stops releasing security updates for it.
Buy Visual Studio 2017 only if you maintain projects or toolchains that depend on it. For anything new, Visual Studio 2026 is supported for longer and handles current .NET versions.
What are the system requirements for Visual Studio 2017?
Visual Studio 2017 runs on Windows 11 and on Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022 or 2025. Microsoft's minimum is 2 GB of RAM, but 4 GB is recommended for typical professional work, and most installs need 20–50 GB of disk space. Windows 10 is no longer on Microsoft's supported list, because Windows 10 itself reached end of support in October 2025.
| Component | Minimum requirement |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 11 or Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022 or 2025 |
| Processor | 1.8 GHz or faster; dual-core or better recommended |
| Memory (RAM) | 2 GB minimum; 4 GB recommended (2.5 GB minimum in a virtual machine) |
| Disk space | Up to 130 GB depending on features; typical installs need 20–50 GB; SSD recommended |
| Display | 720p (1280 × 720) minimum; WXGA (1366 × 768) or higher works best |
| Permissions | Administrator rights to install and update |

How do I install and activate Visual Studio 2017 Enterprise?
Download the Visual Studio 2017 installer from the link in your order email, install the Enterprise edition, then enter your product key inside Visual Studio. The key unlocks the edition it was issued for, so install the matching edition.
- Run the Visual Studio Installer and choose Visual Studio Enterprise 2017.
- Select the workloads you need, such as .NET desktop development, ASP.NET and web development or Desktop development with C++.
- Open Visual Studio once the install finishes. Signing in with a Microsoft account is optional but syncs your settings.
- Go to Help → Register Product and select Unlock with a Product Key.
- Enter the 25-character key from your order email and confirm. The licence status should now show the product as licensed.
A common issue we see is a key entered into the wrong edition. A Professional key only unlocks Professional, and Community isn't unlocked with a key at all. Use the Visual Studio Installer to add the matching edition, then enter the key there. Until you do, Professional and Enterprise run as a 30-day trial.
Frequently asked questions
Does Visual Studio Enterprise include everything in Professional?
Yes. Enterprise includes every Professional feature and adds its own debugging, testing and architecture tools on top. You never need both editions on the same PC, and projects open the same way in either edition.
Can I install Visual Studio 2017 on more than one computer?
Yes. Microsoft licenses Visual Studio per user, not per installation, so the licensed developer may install and use it on any number of devices. Every other developer who uses it needs a licence of their own.
Can I install Visual Studio 2017 next to another version?
Yes. Different major versions of Visual Studio, such as 2019 and 2022, can be installed side by side on the same PC. That helps when you maintain older projects while starting new ones in a newer version.
Can I try Visual Studio Enterprise before applying my licence?
Yes. Without a licence, Professional and Enterprise run as a 30-day trial, extended to 90 days when you sign in with a Microsoft account. Apply your licence before the trial ends to keep using the IDE without interruption.
